Back from the Dead: Vampirism in 18th Century London

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Vampires are real! At least that’s what was believed in 18th century London. Vampire lore dates back hundreds of years to Bulgaria and Romania. However, a lesser known history of the vampire arose from misconceptions about death during 18th century London. Premature burial of the apparently dead was a common occurrence during this time. Fears of being prematurely buried continued until the invention of the safety coffin, which allowed people who awoke to alert those topside of their live state. Come learn 18th century causes, prevention, discovery, and return from the dead of the prematurely buried.

I have been researching 18th century infectious disease in London, since 1994. Over the past 5 years, I have presented throughout the continental US on scholarly medicine, popular remedies, and vampirism in 18th century London. "Liddle Sicks" is my jewelry line, created to support my research and travel costs.
